Fall underwear!

I sewed up so many projects in September, but didn't manage to write a blog post due to travel (and frantically finishing up said sewing projects before heading out). This year I wanted to sew some seasonal pieces, but since I'm not really into patterned fabric, that meant sewing with a fall color palette!

Esme (left) & Self Drafted Panties (right)

Content Sewing

I made two pairs of fall themed underwear and really love the color palette and how they both fit! First, I made the Esme Panties from Evie la Luve on the left. I thought this pattern was really well written with clear directions, but I did change how the gusset was sewn in.

I really dislike having the gusset seams exposed, so I always change patterns to the “burrito method” to make sure the front and back gusset seams are fully enclosed. For this pattern, it did mean altering the order in which the underwear pieces are sewn together, so I would consider changing the gusset seam a more advanced pattern alteration here. I plan on making a second pair that is slightly larger as I've found picot elastic gives me a more snug fit than FOE.

Overall pattern rating: 4.2/5

Second, I sewed up a self-drafted pair of underwear that I created to highlight lace and its edges. I drafted this pattern a few months ago and have been tweaking the design....maybe one day I'll actually post this pattern for sale!

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is whether or not I want to sew in clear elastic along the top to stabilize the lace better. Normally I don't, but I've worn this pair a few times and the lace is already losing its ability to recover from being stretched. As a test, I'm going to sew some clear elastic and see if that increases the lifespan of the lace.

Lattice Baby Quilt

Personal Sewing

I finally finished the quilt and got it to its recipient before the baby arrived-mission accomplished! This was my first time making a quilt and I learned SO MUCH, mainly that quilts take much longer to make than I initially anticipated. I am honestly not sure how people quilt full-size quilts using home sewing machines because it was a struggle for both my hands and my machine doing the baby quilt.

I decided to try free motion quilting and I really enjoyed that aspect of the quilting process! I also sewed the bias binding by hand and although it took a long time, it was fairly relaxing and I could do it while watching my favorite show. Overall, I don’t think the quilt bug has bit me, but I am interested in making some quilted runners and pillows.

All finished! As a side note, there was a bobcat running around the yard we didn't notice until after this picture was taken.

The quilt pattern is free and has enough resources that even someone like me, who's never sewn a quilt before, had no issues! I would definitely recommend the pattern for a newbie because it was easy, but not so easy it was boring.

Overall pattern rating: 4.5/5

Until next month,
Sarah
